I love Chinese medicine, and the relationship with the seasons. Autumn is the season of the large intestines and the lungs. Today i look at a few interesting facts about the lungs. Its a great time to strengthen the lungs in preparation for winter. I use an essential oil blend from my friend Anne at Bio-Excel called Breath Great. read more about it here. A 2010 study found that people who consumed the most cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, kale, and more) had almost half the risk of lung cancer compared to those who consumed the least. Did you know pistachios and cayenne pepper are foods that promote healthy lung function? So get out and enjoy this beautiful autumn and enjoy your breath. This is a picture i took while hiking deer island in Novato last year. Its a pretty hike just under 3 miles. 

Breathing allows you to take in the oxygen your cells need and expel carbon-dioxide waste. But when you exhale, you also breathe out a lot of water.
How much water do you lose from breathing?
When at rest, humans exhale up to 17.5 milliliters (0.59 fluid ounces) of water per hour, according to a 2012 article in the journal Polish Pneumonology and Allergology. But you lose about four times that amount when you exercise, the study said.

Breathing has very little to do with oxygen. Air has 21% oxygen and the body only needs 5%. It’s all about Carbon Dioxide!

Breathing through the mouth can, over time, create a shrinking of the jaw – hence resulting in crooked teeth (or a relapse after having your braces removed).

Breathing through the mouth is the biggest cause for children developing a lisp when they talk.

Getting up during the night to urinate is most likely due to breathing with the mouth open. Breathing through the mouth causes the bladder to shrink, making one feel as though they need to head to the bathroom pronto!

The more you breathe (hyperventilation) the hungrier you will be and the more acidic the body will become.

You should only ever exercise to the intensity that you can keep your mouth closed.
